How CSLB practice questions are structured
Every CSLB exam question is multiple choice with four answer options. The exam doesn't try to trick you — it tests whether you know California-specific rules, common construction math, safety regulations, and contract requirements. Practice questions train two things at once: recall (do you know the answer?) and reasoning (can you eliminate the wrong answers when you don't?).
A sample question
Q: A contractor enters into a home improvement contract for $18,000. What is the maximum down payment allowed under California law?
A. $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less
B. $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is more
C. $2,000 or 20% of the contract price, whichever is less
D. There is no statutory limit
Answer: A. Under California Business and Professions Code §7159, the down payment on a home improvement contract cannot exceed $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less. For an $18,000 contract, 10% = $1,800, so the limit is $1,000. (This rule is one of the most-tested items on the Law & Business exam.)
