Renewal cycle

Active licenses renew every two years. The CSLB mails a renewal notice about sixty days before the expiration date, but it is the licensee's responsibility to renew on time, even without notice. The current active renewal fee is set by the CSLB and is paid online or by mail. Late renewal within five years is allowed with a delinquency fee.

Inactive status

A license can be placed on inactive status if the licensee is not currently doing contracting work. Inactive licenses do not require a bond or workers compensation, and the renewal fee is lower. To reactivate, the licensee files an application, posts the required bonds, and provides current workers compensation if applicable.

Reinstatement after expiration

If a license expires, it can be renewed retroactively for up to five years. After five years, the license is considered abandoned and the former licensee must re-apply, including re-taking the law and trade exams. Always set calendar reminders well in advance of the renewal deadline.
