GFCI
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter trips when current leaks to ground, protecting people from shock. Required in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry, garages, outdoor outlets, and within 6 feet of any sink. Test monthly using the test button.
AFCI
An Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter detects the signature of an electrical arc, which can start fires inside walls. Required on most 120-volt circuits in dwelling unit bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and similar areas under current code.
Combination devices
Dual-function breakers and outlets provide both GFCI and AFCI protection. They cost more but cover both requirements in one device, which can simplify panel layout and code compliance.
