Module 16 · Lesson 01

Passing Inspections the First Time

Preparation that makes inspectors smile.

Listen

Be ready before you call

Walk the job yourself with a checklist before requesting the inspection. Confirm the work is complete, accessible, and matches the approved plans. Have the approved plans, permit card, and any prior inspection sign-offs on site.

Meet the inspector

Be on site when the inspector arrives. Walk the job with them. Answer questions directly and offer information about any deviations from plans. Inspectors approve work faster when the contractor is engaged and professional.

Handle corrections

If something is called out, fix it promptly and schedule a re-inspection. Do not argue on the spot. If you disagree with a correction, ask for the code section and contact the building department supervisor through proper channels.
