How long permits last

A building permit typically expires if work is not started within 180 days of issuance, or if work stops for 180 days. Extensions are possible but require an application and may need a justification. Plan check approval often expires sooner.

Keeping a permit active

Schedule and pass at least one inspection every 180 days to keep the permit active. A signed inspection card and a completed inspection in the building department system both restart the clock.

Closing out

Schedule the final inspection when the job is complete. A permit that is not closed out can haunt the owner for years and may show up on a title report. Close every permit you pull.
