California Contractor Exam Tips (From 500+ Pass Reports)
These ten tips come from what our instructors and students flag as the difference between a first-time pass and a retake. None are shortcuts, but each one shifts the odds on the margins.
1. Answer every question
There's no penalty for wrong answers, only for blanks. Guess and move on if you're stuck.
2. Flag and return
PSI's software lets you flag questions. Flag anything that takes more than 90 seconds and come back after finishing the easy ones.
3. Eliminate two obvious wrong answers
On calculation-style problems, ballpark the answer before looking at the choices. Wrong choices are usually off by a factor of 10 or a sign flip.
4. Bring your ID early
PSI closes registration 30 minutes before your slot. Show up 45 minutes early with a valid government photo ID.
5. Use the on-screen calculator
It's slower than a physical calculator but cheaters caught with phones lose the exam. Stick to the built-in.
6. Read the last sentence first
Long word problems usually ask something narrow. Reading the question stem first tells you what to look for in the setup.
7. Watch for 'not' and 'except'
These flip the answer. Underline them mentally before scanning choices.
8. Trust your first instinct
Data from thousands of exams: changing an answer costs points 60% of the time. Only change if you find explicit evidence you were wrong.
9. Manage bathroom breaks
The clock keeps running. Go before you start and skip the mid-exam break unless you need it.
10. Don't cram exam morning
Fresh recall beats last-minute drilling. Eat breakfast, review your one-page cheat-sheet of formulas, and leave 90 minutes for the drive and parking.
