Trigger heights

In California construction, fall protection is required at heights of 7.5 feet or more in most situations, lower than the federal 6-foot trigger. Roof work, scaffolding, and steel erection have their own specific rules. When in doubt, protect at the lower height.

Acceptable systems

Fall protection options include guardrail systems with top rails between 39 and 45 inches, safety net systems, and personal fall arrest systems. Personal systems must use a full-body harness, a lanyard or self-retracting lifeline, and an anchor rated for at least 5,000 pounds per worker.

Ladders and scaffolds

Ladders must extend at least three feet above the upper landing. Scaffolds over 10 feet require guardrails, and scaffolds must be inspected by a competent person before each shift. Mobile scaffolds need wheels locked when in use. Falls remain the number one killer of construction workers in California.
