California Contractor License Bond: $25,000 Bond Explained
The contractor's license bond isn't insurance for you — it protects customers, employees, and subcontractors if you violate the Contractors License Law. Every California contractor posts one, and letting it lapse triggers automatic license suspension.
Amount and beneficiaries
The bond is $25,000. Consumers can claim for construction defects and financial harm; employees can claim for unpaid wages; subs and suppliers can claim for unpaid work. CSLB itself can claim for statute violations.
How much it costs
Bond premium is credit-based: $150-$300/year for good credit (700+), $300-$600 for average, $500-$1,200+ for poor credit. You pay the premium; the surety guarantees the $25,000 face amount.
Filing with CSLB
Your surety files the bond directly with CSLB. You must file within 90 days of the issuance letter or the application is voided. Keep the bond continuous — lapses suspend the license.
What happens on a claim
The surety investigates. If valid, they pay the claimant up to $25,000 and you owe the surety back (this is indemnity, not insurance). One or two paid claims usually trigger non-renewal — plan for it.
Additional bonds
LLCs post a $100,000 employee/worker bond. If your QI is an RME/RMO who doesn't own 10%+ of the business, a $25,000 Bond of Qualifying Individual is also required.
Frequently asked
Is the bond the same as liability insurance?
No. The bond protects third parties from your violations. Liability insurance protects you from lawsuits over accidents and damage. Most contractors carry both.
What if my bond is cancelled?
CSLB suspends the license automatically. You have limited time to file a replacement bond before the license goes inactive and you lose the license number.
Do I get the $25,000 back?
No. The bond is not a deposit — it's a surety promise. You pay the annual premium; the $25,000 is only ever paid out to legitimate claimants.
