Live Scan Fingerprinting for CSLB Applications

Every person listed on a CSLB license must complete Live Scan fingerprinting. It's how CSLB gets your California DOJ and FBI criminal history for the licensing decision. The process is fast (15 minutes at a scan site) but skipping any detail delays your file for months.

Who needs Live Scan

The applicant, the qualifying individual, every partner in a partnership, every officer of a corporation, and every managing member of an LLC. If you add personnel later, they Live Scan too.

Where to go

Any certified Live Scan operator: UPS Stores, some sheriff's offices, private fingerprinting shops. Use CSLB's Request for Live Scan Service form (BCII 8016) so results route to CSLB automatically.

What it costs

$49 DOJ/FBI processing (paid via the form) plus $20-$40 to the operator. Total typically $69-$89.

What CSLB sees

Full state and federal criminal history: convictions, arrests, and dispositions. They do NOT see traffic infractions or juvenile records.

If you have a record

Convictions within seven years of application require a Statement of Rehabilitation and supporting documents (proof of parole completion, letters of reference). Older convictions or those substantially unrelated to contracting are usually waived.

Frequently asked

How long do results take?

3-10 business days from CSLB's side. Rejection for illegible prints is the most common cause of delay — you re-scan for free within 90 days.

Do I need to re-scan for each application?

No. Once CSLB has your prints on file, you can add classifications or renew without new prints unless CSLB requests them.

Can convictions bar me from a license?

Rarely. CSLB uses a substantial-relationship test. Even felonies related to contracting can be waived with strong evidence of rehabilitation.
